| Diane and Michael Maher Professor of Distinguished Teaching Rachel Newcomb is recognized with the Service-Learning Faculty Award |
On Thursday, November 8, Rollins College and Fern Creek
Elementary School were recognized by the Florida Campus Compact (FL|CC) organization
with the Campus-Community Partnership Award for producing measurable
improvements in people's lives while enhancing higher education. This is the
first time that Rollins has been recognized with this highly competitive award.
"The work between Fern Creek and Rollins demonstrates
how transformational an educational partnership can be,” the Lord Family
Director of Community Engagement Micki Meyer said. “We are proud of what we
have been able to accomplish together through the many courses, projects, and
programs that thousands of students, faculty, and staff have been involved in
over the past decade."
In addition, Diane and Michael Maher Professor of
Distinguished Teaching Rachel Newcomb was recognized with the Service-Learning
Faculty Award for contributing to the
integration of service-learning into the Rollins curriculum.
“I'm thrilled to win this award after being involved with
service-learning since my arrival at Rollins in 2004,” Newcomb said.
"Service-learning offers students first-hand, real world experience with
the abstract problems and social issues we discuss in the classroom. This award
wouldn't have been possible if Rollins did not offer so much support on every
level for professors who want to integrate service-learning projects into their
academic courses.”
"Dr. Newcomb is a role-model for faculty across Florida
and beyond,” Meyer said. “Rollins faculty members have been recognized for the
past six years with the Faculty Service-Learning Award. This is a tremendous
accomplishment and testament to the high level of engaged scholarship on our
campus.”
FL|CC is a membership organization of over 50 college and
university presidents committed to helping students develop the values and
skills of active citizenship through participation in public and community
service. The ultimate goal of FL|CC is to develop educated and active citizens
to sustain participatory democracy. Each year, through an extensive application
process, the organization recognizes various staff, faculty, community members,
and campuses for their achievements in community service.
