CORNELL EXHIBITS AMBASSADOR'S COLLECTION IN 'DIVERSE AFRICA'

 


Winter Park, FL – The Cornell Fine Arts Museum at Rollins College opens its 2007 Winter/Spring exhibition season on Friday, January 19th with several new exhibitions which celebrate contemporary African American art, the art of Henri Matisse, and the tribal arts of Africa. The Cornell has organized Diverse Africa: Selections from Ambassador and Mrs. Ulric Haynes, Jr. Collection which will be on view from January 19 – May 20, 2007.  Ambassador Haynes will give a public talk about his experience as a diplomat, collector and citizen of Africa on February 22nd at 6:00 PM in the Museum.  The talk is free to the public. A private preview and reception for the media, VIPS, artists, and museum members will be held on Thursday, January 18, from 6 - 8 PM.

 

Ambassador and Mrs. Haynes acquired superb examples of tribal jewelry and art over a thirty year period, and especially during his position as United States Ambassador to Algiers under President Jimmy Carter. The Cornell exhibition will feature sculpture, masks and jewelry from the Senufo peoples of the Ivory Coast, the Bedouin tribes of Tunisia, the Benin Kingdom of Nigeria, and the Ashanti of Ghana, among numerous others.   

 

Gallery hours are 10 AM to 5 PM Tuesday - Saturday, and Sunday 1 to 5 PM.  Admission is $5 for adults.  There is no charge for CFAM Members, Rollins College Faculty, Staff, and all students with current ID.  The Cornell Fine Arts Museum is located on the campus of Rollins College near downtown Winter Park.  For additional information, please call 407-646-2526, or visit www.rollins.edu/cfam.
