The original College seal, adopted when the
institution was founded in 1885, was composed of a hand
grasping a flaming torch and the motto "Sit Lux"—here is
light. This was considered too conventional, and on
February 25, 1908, the Board of Trustees adopted a new
seal designed by Grace Lainhart, an art teacher and
director of the School of Fine Arts at the College.
Still used today, the logo shows the rising sun with the
motto "Fiat Lux"—let there be light—which was believed
best expressed the purpose of Rollins College.
