On May 13, 2010, Professor of Environmental Studies Bruce Stephenson appeared in “Imagining a New Florida," a PBS documentary which aired statewide at 8 p.m.
This one-hour film highlighted Florida’s phenomenal growth and sprawl development resulting in a car-oriented culture that’s seen by some as lacking a sense of community. The film answered the questions: Can Florida grow in a sustainable way that allows people to connect with one another? Can Florida develop community?
The film also featured Bob Graham, Andres Duany, Elizabeth Zyberk, Linda Chapin, David Colburn and Kim Tanzler, the dean of architecture at the University of Virginia.
The St. Petersburg Times recently featured the film in a special editorial section which included essays by Stephenson and Mayor of Tampa Pam Iorio.
Stephenson and Professor of Politics Richard Foglesong have spearheaded a new Master of Planning in Civic Urbanism program at Rollins College. Slated to launch in fall 2010, this two-year, 12-course degree will focus on walkable communities, mixed-use development, public transit and green infrastructure.
