As the sun went down on Saturday, November 6, the Rollins community brought the College's 125th Anniversary celebration to a close with the Bach Festival Society of Winter Park and Rollins College Concert Choir's collaborative concert event, Music Under the Stars. The concert featured over 200 members who performed a series of recognizable and celebratory works for an audience on Mill's Lawn. The repertoire included classic movie music such as John William's "Dry Your Tears Afrika," from Amistad, "Tonight" from Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story, as well as a preview of the Rollins theatre department's upcoming musical, Grease. Kevin Gray, who played Phantom and Raoul in Broadway's production of Phantom of the Opera, delighted the audience with a performance of "All I ask of You." Other works included a medley of Mancini movie music, arranged by Rollins student Cory Caplinger (Class of 2012), Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue (featuring Associate Professor of Music Gloria Cook), Puccini's O mio babbino caro (featuring Assistant Professor of Music Julia Foster), and an excerpt from the fourth movement Beethoven's Symphony No.9, which was performed at the Bach Festival Society's most recent concert.
The Bach Festival Society, which is in the midst of celebrating its 75th anniversary, has been the College's musical organization-in-residence since its founding. "The collaboration between the Bach Festival and the College seemed natural to me since the College has been such an influential factor of the Bach Festival's success," said John Sinclair, artistic director of the Bach Festival Society and department chair of the Rollins College Department of Music. "Rollins College is where the arts began in Central Florida, and it is where it continues to flourish. It's important to recognize the influence that Rollins has had on expanding the arts community."
