Want to be a Docent?
The Cornell Fine Arts Museum is looking for passionate art lovers and enthusiastic life-long learners, who are interested in helping museum visitors of all ages, from K-12 students to adults, to appreciate art and get the best experience out of their visits. CFAM’s Education Department provides volunteer docents with ongoing educational experiences behind the scenes, chances to teach our community through art, and the opportunity to meet other likeminded volunteers. Various benefits of serving as CFAM docents include invitations to annual recognition events and special tours by artists, as well as a free copy of the Art for Rollins catalog and discounts at the gift store and for event tickets.
Expectations
No previous background in arts, art history, or teaching is required to volunteer, although such experience is greatly beneficial. Individuals wishing to become CFAM docents should be motivated to learn about art and the art of teaching in a museum, comfortable with interacting with a diverse public, and willing to undergo extensive training.
New docents learn in depth about the works in the Cornell's permanent collection and temporary exhibitions that change three times a year; they also hone their presentation skills. The overall experience is stimulating and rewarding, if not life-changing. For more information, contact our docent administrator.
Volunteer docent hours are available on weekdays, weekends, and evenings, and can range from 2 to 7 hours per week. All school tours are given by appointment Tuesday through Friday. On Saturdays and Sundays we offer guided tours for the general public, starting at 1:00pm. In addition to guided tours, docents can opt to be involved in organizing, preparing, and supervising hands-on, creative art activities for children and their parents on CFAMilies Days.
