Derek Malone
The Dean of Olin Library
About Derek
Derek Malone joined the Olin Library team at Rollins College in the fall of 2023 as the new dean. As the Dean of Olin Library, Derek is enthusiastic about library leadership and advancement and is excited to lead a team of wonderful faculty and staff within Olin Library at Rollins College.
Derek began his library career in a unique environment as the overnight supervisor of a 24/5 library operation. From there, he shifted to the InterLibrary Loan and Resource-Sharing department and learned the intricacies of resource-sharing, consortia agreements, and borrowing and lending expectations.
Following graduate school, Derek began work as an instructional services librarian and led a transition of library instruction for first-year students via a scaffolded and interactive approach focused on critical thinking and information literacy. In recent years, Derek has advanced into a library leadership role providing visionary direction with a forward-thinking mindset concerning library services and spaces.
Derek is particularly interested in researching and discussing library spaces, library services, library instruction, the integration of technology into the library, non-traditional library ideas, and pretty much anything else you can associate with libraries. He has substantial experience in designing and implementing escape rooms into academic library instruction. Aside from libraries and the work surrounding them, Derek enjoys spending time with his wife and three children. He enjoys golf, disc golf, and anything else that can be adapted into a golf-like game. He is also patiently awaiting a championship for either the Cincinnati Reds or Cincinnati Bengals.
If you would like to discuss any library developments or ideas please reach out to Derek.
