The SSA 2026 conference—MAKE: Methods, Atmospheres, Knowledges, Energies—was held last month at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada. Studio art professor Dawn Roe’s installation took the form of a series of scroll-based prints hung against the windows in a corridor at Simon Fraser University’s Djavad Mowafaghian World Art Centre.
The imagery consists of enlarged digitized scans of small analog photographic prints produced during an ongoing series of site-responsive community workshops known as Marking Time With(in) the Water. Each scroll contains a subset of the 428 images co-created with community members across eight bodies of water over more than five years. This shared experience brings people together to witness the unexpected images that emerge, connecting them through what they see, feel, and experience in the moment.
SSA is a member-funded nonprofit that supports the international scholarly and artistic study of affect, producing both print and online media, including SSA’s peer-reviewed, open-access publications. Through conferences, workshops, publications, social media, and mentorship, SSA challenges traditional approaches to research and learning while building a vibrant local and international community. Its work brings together scholars and others interested in exploring how feelings, experiences, and often-overlooked influences shape the world around us.
