Savala Publishes Book on Peruvian and Chilean Transnational History

September 15, 2022

By Stephanie Rizzo ’09

History professor Joshua Savala’s first book takes a human-centric approach to examining the conflict between Peru and Chile.

History professor Joshua Savala published his first book this past summer titled Beyond Patriotic Phobias: Connections, Cooperation, and Solidarity in the Peruvian-Chilean Pacific World.

Published by the University of California Press, the book is a transnational history of cooperative and parallel relations between Peru and Chile in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Rather than centering conflict between the two countries, Savala tells the story of maritime and port workers, medical professionals, and police forces who collaborated across national divisions.

The book is available through the University of California Press website, as well as many other online retailers.
