Mediated Terrain:
Perspectives of a Reenvisioned Landscape
Native American artist Kay WalkingStick poses the question, “What does the earth convey to us metaphorically?,” reassessing an idea which is at the core of traditional landscape painting. Moving beyond conventional representations of nature that focus on capturing awe-inspiring beauty, this exhibition explores alternative approaches that center around the artists’ unique experiences.
Employing a variety of media, artists Romare Howard Bearden, David Benjamin Sherry, and Kay WalkingStick examine the social dimension of our interaction with the land. Works by Arthur Bowen Davies, Nancy Graves, Maya Lin, and Brett Weston consider themes of environmental preservation, contemplation, and history. Each of the pieces on view addresses the nuances of the interconnectedness between humans and their environment. Mediated Terrain encourages reflection on preconceived notions about nature and invites viewers to envision new ways of engaging with their surroundings.
