INT195F: Ghosts of the Holy City: An Immersion into Race, Faith, and Place in Charleston, South Carolina

This field study offers a unique opportunity to delve into the intersection of race, faith, and social justice while earning academic credit and expanding your worldview. This immersion experience will take you into the heart of Charleston, nicknamed "The Holy City," where you will explore its rich history and vibrant culture including the following highlights! International African American Museum: Discover the profound history of Gadsden’s Wharf, the largest slave port in the United States, and gain insight into African American heritage and resilience. Mother Emanuel A.M.E. Church: Visit the historic church that became a symbol of faith and forgiveness after the tragic 2015 shooting, and engage with its community to learn about their ongoing journey toward justice. Avery Research Center for African American Culture: Explore the archives and exhibitions at the College of Charleston, deepening your understanding of African American contributions to the city and the nation. Charleston Cuisine and Ghost Tour: Enjoy some of the city’s renowned cuisine and embark on a ghost tour to experience Charleston’s unique blend of history, mystery, and culture. Mount Moriah Baptist Church: Conduct research in the archives of one of South Carolina’s largest African American congregations and discover the power of Negro spirituals as a form of resistance and liberation.

  • Course Requirements: Attendance at pre-travel meetings, book study, reflection paper

  • Estimated Program Fee: This is a grant funded field study with no program fee.
  • Program Fee Includes: tuition, housing, all meals, activities, transportation by bus to/from Charleston and in Charleston, and program administration.
  • Estimated Additional Costs: personal expenses $50, federal loan fees $0, books/course materials $0, and professional licensure/certification $0.
  • Special Notifications: Students should be prepared for some walking on uneven ground/pavement, use of stairs, and some distressing or triggering content in relation to civil rights, slavery and gun violence.
