HIS 305F: Vietnam - Culture and History
Tour Vietnam and learn more about the history and culture of this fascinating place! Visit many of the nation’s 54 ethnic minorities. Explore the bustling business center of Ho Chi Minh City and the elegant capital of Hanoi. This trip will focus on the history of Vietnam, including the American involvement in the country, and how that history has shaped the culture and economy of the modern nation. Students will fly to Dien Bien Phu--the site of the defeat of French colonial forces, view the ruins of the Champa empire, hike with Tay natives along the Laos border, explore the palaces of the Nguyen dynasty, and enjoy an evening at the opera. At the same time, students will enjoy world-renown cuisine and experience a wide variety of indigenous and colonial art and architecture.

- Prerequisites: History of Vietnam or Decade of Decisions: 1960s
- Course Requirements: Attendance at pre-trip meetings, in-country attendance, participation in regular discussions and debriefings, individual site presentation with accompanying reflection paper, cultural reflection assignment, and post-trip survey.
